30 rain-related deaths in Telangana, including 15 in Hyderabad, Hyd streets flooded

 


Thirty people have died in Telangana after heavy rains today - seeing the roads like rivers, cars were completely submerged and swept along by powerful currents, and buildings were almost completely swept away.

15 people died from Hyderabad alone - among those two months old - due to water logging in the low-lying areas. Nine others died when a compound wall collapsed and 10 houses collapsed during heavy rain overnight.

The city started raining again late Wednesday.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today spoke to Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao, or KCR, and his Andhra Pradesh counterpart, Jaganmohan Reddy, whose state was equally affected yesterday, assuring them of all possible support from the central government.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah said that he is "closely monitoring the situation in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh (and) that the Modi government is committed to provide all possible assistance to the people of both states in this hour of need". Heavy rains continued in South Odisha for the third consecutive day on Wednesday, causing waterlogging in several areas, with Ganjam and Gajapati districts being the worst affected.

The IMD upheld the yellow alert (heavy rainfall) for nine districts till Friday. “The depression over Telangana has moved west-northwards and has no direct impact on Odisha. However, due to the upper air trough and prevailing wind patterns, isolated heavy thunderstorms are likely to occur in some districts by Friday, ”the IMD bulletin said.
